Toronto Real Estate: Riverdale…It’s All About The Food!
Almost 30 years ago, I began my Realtor career at an office which Bosley Real Estate owns at 169 Danforth Avenue. In those days it was Terry Martel Real Estate, and my first few years were cutting my teeth in Prime Riverdale and Leslieville, although we called it Cabbagetown II at the time, a tribute to the number of Victorian Houses found south of Gerrard..
I have watched the housing flourish both north and south of the Danforth driven by the great amenities and for families, great schools like Jackman and Withrow.
However….what would Riverdale be without its’ great diversity and the confirmed “foodies” that live in the area. Where else could you find wonderful fruits and vegetables, Alex Farm cheeses, Sweet Touth desserts, and the best assortment of tastes of the world in such a concentrated area? They even have a weekend celebration, “Taste of the Danforth” to celebrate.
In a short drive you can also experience Greek food (Mezes on the Danforth), Indian (Siddharthaat Gerrard and Coxwell), Chinese Dim Sum (River Seafood on Gerrard), Vietnamese(Mi Mi on Gerrard), French (Batifoleon Gerrard at Howland) or experience the Oriental Supermarket T and T(Cherry Street, south of Lakeshore). Obviously these are some of my favourites but feel free to comment back with your Riverdale suggestions.
When it comes to a great place to live to eat or vis-a-versa, it is hard to beat Riverdale for city living!

Richard, I am the outcast of my family. They are fine diners, gourmet cooks and I – I am meat and potatoes. This causes a lot of problems at family gatherings as I refuse to eat raw fish or spicy foods. So, eating in Riverdale – what is the best “joint” in the city? I still go to the Tulip on Queen and love it there. The Goof on Queen, etc. Would be interesting, what is the best old fashioned joint in the city? A throwback to gravy on fries, hot beef sandwiches and why, outside of Swiss Chalet can’t I ever get a decent and simple fresh chicken sandwich? I love going to small town Ontario on business, I usally can eat there, never see alfalfa sprouts in my salad, they save them for the cattle.
Yep, I am a throwback in Toronto.
Hey Barry….if it is comfort food you like there is the New York at the South East corner of Broadview and Danforth, though Allen’s makes great Burgers and Fries!
I am with you Barry. I have been going to the Goof on Queen since I was about 5 years old. The Tulip is good steak but a rude and abrasive owner has put a damper on their business. At least that is my opinion as to why they have slowed down so much. I won’t eat their now. But the best newbie on the east end block is The Burgers Priest. Best Burgers in T.O. I eat their gluten free option since I can’t eat wheat buns anymore. Not to be missed if you love a good burger and fries.
