Toronto Streets: Congratulations Cabbagetown on Being Number Three!
June 29th, 2009 categories: Cabbagetown, Real Estate
NUMBER THREE??
Today, the Toronto Star’s Christopher Hume named “any street in Cabbagetown east of Parliament Street” as his 3rd favorite street in the City in the Star’s List Week.
We knew that Cabbagetown was great and it is sad to be only number three; but in the scheme of things, with hundreds of areas to live in in this great city, number three is PRETTY COOL!
Of course, I think he is wrong about only east….the west is just more diverse but has great houses!
Check out the Christopher Hume’s article here, posted today, Monday June 29th, 2009!

Toronto: The Danforth Rocks!
June 29th, 2009 categories: Around TORONTO, Cabbagetown, Toronto
Last Saturday night, the sixth day of the 2009 Toronto Garbage Strike, I was with friends on the Danforth for dinner (Mezes at 456 Danforth Avenue: the BEST!). The street was packed with people enjoying the weather, eating outside, promenading, window shopping and the streets were cleaner than ever. There was no sign of a Garbage Strike anywhere.
I don’t know whether it is the local Business Improvement Area but it looks as if the Stores and Restaurants were trying very hard to make sure that they streets were spotless. Read the rest of this entry »

City of Toronto on Canada Day Weekend
June 26th, 2009 categories: Around TORONTO, Toronto
As we start into the most important Summer weekend with a GARBAGE STRIKE overshadowing the City as well as a failed City of Toronto deal with the FEDS (it seems that Mayor Miller and Councillor Adam Giambrone have problems reading), we are told that Public Parks are to be used to store garbage and that CANADA DAY Festivities on City property are also cancelled. Maybe I’ll go to Etobicoke (they have private garbage collection) for the weekend!
There is good news however: we are also told that the Teflon Mayor’s support has been waining…go figure!
One doesn’t have to read many of my Blogs to know that I believe that David Miller is a nice guy but has been a disaster for the City of Toronto; We are all paying more taxes than before, we are paying for our Garbage collection separately (it was included in your taxes before), we now have a faulty Land Transfer Tax and Car Licensing which encourages buyers to move to the 905. ***PLEASE NOTE: AS OF NOON ON JUNE 22, 2009 THE CITY WORKERS ARE NOT ONLY ALLOWING CARS TO DELIVER GARBAGE TO THE SITES BELOW, ONLY CITIZENS ON FOOT.***
As suspected the Outside workers in the City of Toronto, not including Etobicoke have gone on strike. Here is some information on living through the 2009 Garbage Strike:
For Houses
Residential curbside garbage, green bin and recycling collection is cancelled in all areas of the City except Etobicoke, where it will continue. Use a backyard composter for yard waste and organics (no meat or dairy products should be composted)

Toronto Moves Towards a Strike.
June 21st, 2009 categories: Around TORONTO, Getting around the City, Toronto

As we march towards a CUPE strike of City workers, here are my thoughts. It will be interesting to see what transpires as the days pass:
- I think that what the City workers are asking for and have been getting is unrealistic. Banked sick days, whether the economy is good or bad, is an exceptional BENEFIT, that does not appear in the private sector without bankrupting the Corporation. It is time to let that one go. It is not a RIGHT, it is a BENEFIT. Read the rest of this entry »

Toronto City Politics: Draft John Tory
June 18th, 2009 categories: Around TORONTO
There seems to be a groundswell building to draft John Tory to take another shot at running for Mayor of Toronto. Marcus Gee of the Globe and Mail wrote a great article in support on Monday June 15th, 2009, and everywhere you look there is more and more disillusion with Mayor David Miller and the need for a hero to come to the Toronto City Council. He would definitely have my support as he did last time. He has always struck me as being a man of conviction and common sense.
It will be interesting to read your thoughts below and see what happens in the run up to the 2010 Toronto Municipal Election.
Royson James of the Toronto Star wrote and interesting article last weekend as well.

The door prize of a weekend getaway to Stratford includes a stay at Hughson Hall (hughsonhall.com). Now a glorious B&B, this house was featured in the Warner Brothers movie One Foot in Heaven and was nominated for best picture in 1941 (the movie was, not the house). Read the rest of this entry »
