Toronto: Confessions of a “Scab” During The Garbage Strike 2009

Cabbagetown Cleanup Crew!!Looks like the 2009 Garbage Strike is finally over. What will we do with our Sundays?  The past four, a group of Cabbagetown residents have been meeting at the JetFuel Cafe’ at 10 AM and have been trying to keep the litter at bay.

It has been an interesting experience. We have been called “Scabs” but I think you can only really be a scab if you are getting paid…I think we prefer being called concerned citizens… Read the rest of this entry »

Technology: Very Cool Web Site to Create your Own “Cloud”

Wordle TorontismHere is a “Wordle Cloud” from a very cool web site at http://www.wordle.net/. All you do is enter a bunch of text or add your URL (it must have an RSS feed) and it creates a cloud that you have lots of options to change the shapes, font and colours as well as orientation. Save it as a pdf and then convert it to a jpg and you have your very own wordle.

How cool is that !!

31st Annual Cabbagetown Tour of Homes, September 20th, 2009.

CPA Logo

Here is a press release that was sent yesterday about the upcoming “Cabbagetown Tour of Homes”. It was on the very first Tour of Homes that I was introduced to Cabbagetown, bought my first house, became a REALTOR, and the rest is history. I remember thinking “Cabbagetown is like a small town in the middle of a big City and I want to live here”. It was a good thought then…and now!

CABBAGETOWN OPENS ITS DOORS FOR THE 31ST ANNUAL TOUR OF HOMES
SEPTEMBER 20, 2009

TORONTO – Once a year, in one of oldest parts of the city, the Cabbagetown Tour of Homes gives curious visitors a chance to look behind the area’s Victorian facades and see how people live in these historic houses today.

In what could be called Toronto’s original diverse neighbourhood – where workers’ cottages, shops and the occasional factory once mixed with grand residences – this year’s Tour of Homes reflects Cabbagetown’s unique roots with an intriguing cross-section of properties. TORONTO, July 20, 2009 – In the first two weeks of July, Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported 4,437 sales up 27 per cent compared to the first two weeks of July 2008. The average price for these transactions was up four per cent year-over-year to $394,750.

Real Estate Pricing: Who Sets the Price in Real Estate?

iStock_000005979170XSmall“It is REALTORS who make the marketplace and set the prices that Buyers have to pay!”. I have heard this statement time and time again…

Unless your REALTOR is beating you about the head to either sell for a certain price or buy at a certain price, it is the Buyer who decides if he will short, meet or surpass the Seller’s price. REALTORS give you suggested guidelines but it is your money that you spend or receive and it is totally your decision. Read the rest of this entry »

Cabbagetown Cleanup Continues Sunday, July 19th, 2009 at 10 AM at the Jet Fuel Cafe’

iStock_000004459519XSmallThanks for your help over the past few weeks. Parliament Street is looking good and it is a great feeling to be out there with your neighbors on Community projects. This weekend Kathy Goulding will be meeting you at the JetFuel Cafe’ on Sunday at 10 AM. I am travelling to Vancouver to meet my recently born great-nephew but will be back for the following weekend.

I have been asked if we were Scab: My thought is that when citizens take responsibility for the streets that they walk on everyday, how can that make us scabs? If we were 3rd parties getting paid by the City that would make us Scab…however these are our streets and we walk on them everyday. Read the rest of this entry »

A Sad Loss for Cabbagetown…

Cabbage headOver the years you could always count on Peggy Kurtin to set you straight on what should and should not be Historical in Cabbagetown. Sadly, she has passed away after a long battle with Cancer.

She could be frustrating at times and was miffed by people who were not 100% committed to preserving the Heritage of Cabbagetown. She will be missed. She was a valiant volunteer and spokesperson for the Victorian Homes that needed a voice. Cabbagetown has had a great loss…

The service and internment will be Thursday, July 16th, 2009.

The Globe and Mail has a notice but you can also read it here for information. The Cabbagetown Preservation Accociation has also posted a very nice memorial here.
