August 24th, 2010 categories: Around TORONTO, Cabbagetown, Downtown Toronto, Lifestyle, Neighborhoods, Toronto
Rick McCarthy was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1941. A 7th-Dan Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, McCarthy has trained for 25 years with both Kancho Takemasa Okuyama and Renshi Shah Franco at their Toronto dojos. While working with the renowned Franco, McCarthy discovered a correlation between Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and the evolution of his own half-century career as an artist. “I see my painting and my fighting as being one and the same,” McCarthy says, “a struggle for existence.”

Neighbourhoods: Cabbagetown Is Going To The Dogs!!!
August 23rd, 2010 categories: Around TORONTO, Cabbagetown, Downtown Toronto, Neighborhoods, Toronto
I decided many years ago, and am now convinced, that in my next life I plan to come back as a dog. Now that major life decision has been made, I also would like to live that next life in the Cabbagetown Neighbourhood of Toronto.
I would have lots of friends close by to hang with and when I get tired of smelling their butts, I would have some children to play ball with…. My owners would be able to take me to the Off-leash Park at the bottom of the hill at the end of Carlton Street (Riverdale Park ). Not many places where a good dog like me can be off-leash in the City…Hopefully my owners would bring two balls to play with, one after the other (no way I’m bringing back one ball till they throw the next)…well, unless there are treats involved of course…Ice Cream being my favourite…Let me tell you, it is important to know how to train your owners from day one! Condominium Corner: Status Certificates
August 19th, 2010 categories: Around TORONTO, Condominium, Downtown Toronto, Real Estate, Selling in Toronto, Technology, Toronto
Within the process of listing and selling a Condominium recently, I got a bit of a run-around from a management office that I thought I might share with you: Before listing we called to order a Status Certificate and was told that the staff person dealing with Status Certificates was out of town on Holiday. We asked for a request form to fill out and dutifully wrote out a cheque for $100 and mailed both to the management office. Not having heard back from the management office we assumed that all was moving ahead as it should have been.
A week later we had five offers that we were reviewing, almost all of which were conditional on Status Certificate Approval.
I called the Management Office direct for an update and I was told: that the cost for a Status Certificate had been increased to $130 plus HST and that only a certified cheque or Bank draft was acceptable.
I insisted that the Condominium Act mandated Status Certificates at $100 and that no taxes were applicable and was chastised for my being difficult and was almost hung up on. I suggested that someone at their Head Office be called, as this is one of, if not the largest Condominium Property Management in Toronto, Del Property Management and that their information should be corrected otherwise they would be contravening the Condominium Act . A call back a few minutes later was very conciliatory…yes, I was correct that the amount was $100 and yes their were no taxes to be paid, neither GST, PST or HST… Read the rest of this entry »

TORONTO, August 5, 2010 – Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported 6,564 sales in July – a 34 per cent dip from the record 9,967 sales reported in July 2009. New listings, at 10,825, dropped to the lowest level for the month of July since 2002.

Total sales through the first seven months of 2010 were up by 12 per cent compared to the same period in 2009.

The Cabbagetown Forsythia Festival….
July 18th, 2010 categories: Around TORONTO, Cabbagetown, Downtown Toronto, Lifestyle, Neighborhoods
It has been such a crazy time the past few months that I finally went in to my Vado HD Video Camera and realized that I had taken these videos of the Cabbagetown Forsythia Festival.
This is a great event in early May in Downtown Toronto and one of my favourite times to see the kids and their parents emerging from their warm winter accomodations and start to deal with the first signs of Spring. However this year, the Forsythia were almost one month early due to our mild winter but…it was still a great time had by all.
Many thanks to our Festival Queen’s Gina Dineen and Liz Kingstone. Enjoy the video and look forward to the first weekend in May for next year’s event!

Get Ready for the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition.
July 2nd, 2010 categories: Around TORONTO, Downtown Toronto, Neighborhoods, Toronto
Whew! Last weekend’s G20 is over, this weekend’s Toronto PRIDE Festivities will rock the Downtown but the weekend after that July 9, 10 and 11, 2010, Torontonians will be able to Celebrate the Arts at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition . Long a big favourite of mine, Toronto City Hall’s Nathan Phillips Square will be rocking with a group of new talented artists who have been passed by a jury of their peers to display their work. My friend Diana Menzies , well known as a Commercial Realtor in downtown Toronto, has been showing her work there now for three or four years….I feel like the proud Father as Di and I spent a number of vacations with her doing early paintings and me….vegging, of course!
