Every year after a Holiday period with friends and family, I start my year with a trip to New York for Real Estate Connect and REBarCamp New York. These 4 or 5 days of spending time with the brightest minds in my business bring me back to the Toronto spring market stimulated and full of ideas. A lot of the time is spent on how to use technology to provide better service, but a lot of talk is around business models and leadership.

Some of the highlights involved REBarCamp New York, which was held on the first day and was filled with 100+ agents and techies sharing what is working for them and their latest innovations.

The next day was the first day of Real Estate Connect and started with a Keynote address from Adriana Huffington, the founder of the Huffington Post. She had great things to say about leadership and attendees were probably shocked to hear that she is a strong believer in sleep as a great support to leadership. She felt that many smart leaders are making stupid mistakes because they are too tired and may go for the easy solution over the right one. She encouraged leaders to stop using our lack of sleep as a badge of honor…. believing that when you give 100%, you are successful, and that “multi-tasking” really means you are doing neither well.

The next three days were filled with discussions of drone cameras, agent reviews and ratings, data and discussion of customer management systems, brand and branding, new business models, search engine optimization and Google algorithms, the New York Real Estate market and finishing up with a morning of presentations about the foreign market. The international day included how to work with global buyers and sellers, customs and models from all over the world and why foreign buyer and sellers are so important and relevant in today’s global economy.

I was honoured at Tuesday's Agent Reboot when James Dwiggins, a key member of the Realty World Northern California executive team, spoke about the community videos that are on our website and were shot by Mark Wilson of Property Films. Many thanks for the shout-out from James and the production by Mark!! The videos have been very successful and there are more getting ready to be launched in the next months.

It was an exhilarating and exhausting four days and amazing networking with agents from around the world. I seldom leave without meeting someone who can provide service for any of my clients who may be moving or looking for second or third properties. Being able to meet these other agents face-to-face, discuss and share thoughts on issues, allows better understanding of their markets and our own here in Toronto. At all times, one of my goals, is also to promote Toronto and the wonderful City we live and work in…and the four days included meeting some great service providers and seeing their offerings that my team can start using in our business…
