Our clients go through tens of thousands of images in the search for that one special little piece of the real estate that will house their family for, hopefully, generations. Taking the perfect photo that will catch their attention is such an important task that you should always let a professional photographer to take care of. Nothing beats professional photos.
But in case you have to do it yourself, using your phone, here are a few apps that could really help you. They will also help you if you want to share the images of your newest listing on social media as quickly as possible.
Adobe Photoshop Express
Starting off with the app version of probably the most famous photo editing program in the world, I believe that it might be even better than the real thing. Of course, it does not have all the capabilities of the fully integrated computer program; however, I still believe it can be better for at least for what we’re trying to do here. Here is my case for AP Express over any other photo editor and even over regular AP.
It is incredibly easy to use. It was made so much more accessible even to photography laymen. Josh from Smarttech comments:
The environment of the app is super easy to navigate and understand right of the bat. If you are not at least a semi-professional photographer, this will do very nicely for all the functionality you’ll ever need from a photo editor.
If you are feeling particularly lazy and you do not need to apply any specific adjustments, you simply want to adjust contrast, exposure and white balance, there’s even automatic one-touch fix that does it all for you, without any need for your input.
Naturally, you can share your creations via Facebook, Instagram or text/email. Quick adjustment of the photo in case a client asks you to send him a snapshot from the site is always appreciated.
In case you want to do even more with your photos, you can try out entire family of Photoshop mobile apps.
Photoshop Mix lets you combine multiple photos into a single image, reduce camera blur and apply Content-Aware Fill. Photoshop Fix is an amazing photo retouching app that lets you fix even wider variety of imperfections in your photos.
All in all, after testing both full blown AP and the AP Express, I believe that simpler functionality of AP Express and quick orientation in the interface will fit perfectly with anyone’s needs.
I’ve been talking for quite a while about the fact that AP Express is simpler, just so I don’t scare you off, I’d like to assure you that there is plenty to play with still. It includes all the basics, such as: Crop, straighten, rotate and flip your photos. Remove red-eye and pet-eye. Moreover it contains spots, dirt and dust removal; slide controls for clarity, contrast, exposure, highlights, shadows, temperature, tint and vibrance; 20 eye-catching effects; 15 borders and frames; import and edit photos in raw formats capability.
While AP Express clearly aimed to provide support for .raw files from the latest camera models from most camera manufacturers, according to some online reviews, it took some time for the patch to come and solve the .raw issue on some cameras (at the very least you know it is eventually going to be available).
Over 100 exclusive photographic effects you won’t be able to find on any other photo editor, one-tap fix capability, advance curve feature, weekly events that will help you share your photos and also learn about photography to improve your skills every week – those are just features that fall under Photo Editor function of Fotor.
I present to you Fotor, an alternative for those who simply don’t click with AP. I completely understand that a huge number of us entail an equally huge array of tastes and preferences. That is why I decided to test multiple photo editors to provide you with more alternatives to choose from. Also, Fotor supports not only English but also German, French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese,Turkish, Indonesian and are actively working on more languages!
Here are my favourite features that Fotor offers and I reckon are priceless for every mobile-photographer out there.
- Enhanced Camera allows for six photo-taking modes, with features like Grid, Big Button, Burst, Timer, Stabilizer, and Square.
- Photo Collage allows you to use Classic Photo Collage of up to 9 photos and choose from tons of incredible templates. Customize template, background, spacing and more to make that perfect collage of rooms in the house, or different angles of the property you want to present..
- Vision provides you with weekly photo events and different topics, where you’ll have a chance to gain inspiration from other photographers (and win prizes, money and more! – nice bonus to being useful at work) In the Inspire section you can enjoy all the amazing photography works and even collect the photos you like and follow the photographers.
Simple, one function app to help you target the social media in one single entry. It’s not really made to take photos with, but rather play with them and share them with your friends.
PicCollage, the Top 10 photo app on mobile according to the number of app review magazines is one of the musts on your phone. Join over 100 million people who use PicCollage to combine photos, text, Ink drawings, stickers and hand-clipped cutouts to create the prettiest collages you’ll ever see created on your device. LA Times and Newsday writes:
You can impress your mother, brag to your co-workers, and make your vacation look even better than it really was, all before you pack your suitcase to return home … It could be the fastest way you’ll ever find to organize a batch of photos … Also makes gorgeous emails and can turn your image into a real postcard.
You can also import photos from your phone’s Pictures folder and web image search. The app rocks simple touch gestures to rotate, resize, flick to delete. Sounds simple enough, however, in my experience it took me quite some time to get it right so that each picture fitted perfectly. My advice would be to leave some leeway when you decide to make one of these, it’s not really a momentary thing.
One more feature I had a lot of fun with was Ink. You can draw pretty much anything on your collage, for example a signature over one of the photos is a nice touch.
Panorama 360 is by far the best panorama camera app letting you create 360 degree PRO quality panoramas that I have tried out as a real estate agent. Over the period of couple of weeks, I tried iPhone app 360 Panorama by Occipital, Inc. and Nokia’s own Lumia Panorama app and I have to say that comparatively, the winner is by far Panorama 360. The only issue is that it is so far only available on Android, which makes it severely limited in the terms of operating system your phone uses. In case you do not have Android I would recommend the two apps above, which came as close seconds in my review. Peter Mira, the app development engineer, currently working for a major mobile developer, has commented for me:
I agree with you, Panorama is for now more precise and easier to use than the competition. Plus we mustn’t forget that it also looks really good, that is always a factor when it comes to apps.
But let’s get back to the app that was named In the Top 20 apps at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona when it came out and has been praised by the apps reviewers and tech magazines ever since. This simple yet ingenious piece of software will help you fit everything there is to fit in so your clients will not overlook anything. I especially liked this app for taking pictures in gardens, the trees and shrubberies look amazing as a part of the panorama, with the house shyly looking in from the corner or the picture, inviting the person looking at it to scroll down and see what it hides inside.
Just tap the capture button and move your phone slowly and steadily from left to right (the amount of steadiness needed for a clear shot is really good when compared with the other apps!). Once done capturing, the frames will be stitched into one awesome panorama automatically. The app lets you share your panoramas on Facebook, Twitter and even Tumblr.
The app is similar to Photosphere but does not do the top and down part. I have considered this one as well, however it felt just too much, kind of over the top for the real estate photo. After all, our clients do need photos that are not skewed in any way and let them estimate how the house really looks.
My final advice for using this app would be, take more panoramas, try to limit the shaking of your phone as much as possible, and just enjoy the fun experience!!!
Lastly I have tested one of my favourites. I had so much fun with Kanvas. I have to warn you though, this app is really addictive. As for your family pictures I say, go for it head first, as for property pics, exercise a bit caution and don’t get too carried away.
So what is Kanvas about? You have six compose modes by making custom gifs, time-lapse & slow motion videos, animations, drawings and photo slideshows fully at your disposal. All kanvases are easily shared to Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Messenger and of course email.
Key feature include recording of up to 15 seconds of video with a custom stop motion camera. 500 handcrafted stickers and overlays to spice up your kanvas photos and videos. Free and premium packs include animated overlays and stickers, emojis, kanvas mascot, love, arrows, shapes, popular mantras, gentleman stickers, headwear, words and more! Put your thoughts and opinions into words with over 150 beautiful fonts. You can also draw on your kanvas with 7 paint brushes and tons of colors! The use of these features is super easy. I found it very intuitive, despite its variety of functions.
Canva – Graphic Design & Photo Editing on the App Store
Even though Canva isn’t exactly a mobile app (yet!), I have to include it on this list. We use Canva daily to create beautiful social media posts, graphics for our articles or e-cards. In addition to the usual photo editing options, like adjusting brightness, contrast, cropping, applying filters, Canva allows you to choose from a big variety of different design templates to help you create highly professional looking graphics. And the best thing about it? You don’t have to be a designer to get the hang of it. It’s really intuitive and easy to use.
At the moment Canva is available as an app for iPad, or you can access it on its website online, but here are some good news – a mobile app is on the horizon.
Canva is seriously considering a mobile app in the future. It will look more like our iPad app which, if you have already tried, features Canva’s signature drag-and-drop interface. Canva’s ultimate goal is to make design tools available to everyone,
says Sylvester Jalnaiz, Canva’s Community Outreach Specialist.
Whether you use it to improve your listings marketing material, or simply to create a nice graphic for that great motivational quote you found on Pinterest, Canva has it all. What I really like about it, is how up-to-date it is. When we were preparing an e-card for the Chinese New Year to send to our subscribers, Canva had a lot of great design elements and template to choose from.
Based on my interactions with our users, they tend to find Canva to be most useful for creating social media graphics (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube page and even Etsy) as well as designing some cool Infographics for presentations. A lot of our userbase are small business owners who utilize Canva for their marketing campaigns,
Sylvester has told me.
If you want your graphics to be modern and appealing and your Powerpoint presentation to be more than just boring slides of text, make sure to try Canva. But beware, because once you go Canva, you never go back.
I hope that you found this article helpful, and I would really appreciate all your feedback. What are your favourite apps to use when taking pictures?
